I'm pretty sure this is because south of the gate is p2p but the zone is f2p, so it teleports you north

This function moves the character from the south side of the gate or next to the gate back to the f2p area at point x. But in 2006 it was possible to log in and walk normally on the desert side also on the f2p server (in a limited area).
